Wildfire Response, Transit Funding and Earth Day Efforts Lead Aurora Headlines
Aurora, CO – April 1, 2026 – Wildfire response at Buckley, new RTD transit funding, and Earth Day volunteer drives shape a busy week in Aurora.
Aurora is juggling public safety, transit investment and environmental action this week, with several developments unfolding over the past few days.
Wildfire at Buckley Quickly Contained
Fire crews responded Sunday morning to a wildfire burning on Buckley Space Force Base near Mississippi Avenue and Ceylon Street. Thick smoke was visible across parts of the city, prompting concern from nearby neighborhoods.
Aurora Fire Rescue assisted base personnel and worked to protect open space along the city side of the perimeter fence. By late morning, officials said the fire no longer posed a threat to Aurora. The cause remains under investigation.
The incident comes as the region continues to see dry, windy conditions that can elevate spring fire risk along the Front Range.
$6 Million Annual Transit Partnership Program Opens
The Regional Transportation District announced March 31 that it is launching its 2026 call for projects under its Partnership Program, making $6 million available annually over the next three years.
The funding supports community-driven mobility projects, including first- and last-mile connections, transit enhancements and local shuttle services. Aurora organizations, business districts and local governments are eligible to apply.
With Aurora continuing to grow along key corridors and around light rail stations, the funding round could help advance smaller-scale transportation improvements that complement larger infrastructure investments.
Earth Day Volunteer Push Across Aurora
Community members are also gearing up for Earth Day activities throughout April. Volunteer opportunities posted this week include tree plantings, food forest expansion, school garden builds and playground mural prep in partnership with the city.
Organizers say the events are designed to strengthen neighborhood green spaces while encouraging hands-on civic engagement. Several projects focus on long-term sustainability and improving access to healthy outdoor environments.
Together, the week’s developments highlight Aurora’s ongoing focus on safety, mobility and environmental stewardship as the city heads deeper into the spring season.
