Willow Bend Demolition Plans Move Forward; Council Invests in Parks and Erosion Control

Plano, TX – March 26, 2026 – Willow Bend mall demolition plans advance as Council approves park upgrades and erosion control work citywide.

Big changes are coming to one of Plano’s most recognizable retail sites, while City Council continues investing in parks and infrastructure across town.

Willow Bend Redevelopment Expands

Revised plans for The Shops at Willow Bend call for demolition of nearly the entire mall property, with work expected to begin within the next 12 months. Updated proposals would preserve select structures, including portions of the restaurant district and parking areas, as developers explore a large-scale mixed-use transformation.

The redevelopment has been closely watched as Plano leaders discuss long-term economic development opportunities at the site, including previous talks tied to a potential arena project. The shift from a traditional enclosed mall to a broader redevelopment reflects changing retail trends and the city’s push to reposition aging commercial corridors.

$2.29 Million Tejas Park Renovation

At its March 23 meeting, Plano City Council approved $2.29 million in improvements to Tejas Park. The renovation will replace aging amenities and add new features aimed at improving safety and accessibility.

Planned upgrades include two new playgrounds, additional fitness equipment, a pavilion, disc golf baskets, a lighted walking trail with benches and enhanced irrigation. The project is part of the city’s ongoing capital investments in neighborhood parks as Plano’s infrastructure matures.

Erosion Control at Arbor Hills

Council also approved an interlocal agreement allowing expanded erosion control work at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve. Costs for the additional upstream repairs will be reimbursed by the North Texas Municipal Water District.

By coordinating projects under a single contractor, the city aims to reduce disruption for park visitors while addressing long-term drainage and environmental concerns. The work builds on existing erosion mitigation near a pedestrian bridge in the preserve.

Together, the actions highlight Plano’s dual focus: reimagining major commercial sites to strengthen future tax base growth, while continuing to maintain and modernize core public infrastructure.
