WisDOT plans four-mile WIS 164 resurfacing through Sussex beginning late summer 2026
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is preparing a four-mile resurfacing and improvement project on WIS 164 from Swan Road in Pewaukee to County VV/Main Street in Sussex, with construction scheduled to begin in late summer 2026.
The work will affect drivers using a major route into and through Sussex. WisDOT expects WIS 164 to remain open with one lane of traffic in each direction during construction, but short-term closures are anticipated at major intersections and side roads while paving is underway.
Access to local businesses and residences is expected to be maintained during the project. Drivers, residents and businesses should nevertheless plan for lane restrictions and temporary limits at intersections and side roads.
What the project includes
WisDOT plans to mill the existing pavement and place two layers of new asphalt. The project also includes updating curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
Traffic signals will be replaced at three locations: Swan Road, Lisbon Road and Silver Spring Drive. The improvements are intended to address the roadway surface, pedestrian accessibility and signal equipment along the project route.
The project’s second segment runs from County K/Lisbon Road to County VV/Main Street in Sussex. That portion connects the work directly to the village’s central WIS 164 corridor, including the County VV/Main Street endpoint.
Two-stage construction schedule
WisDOT is dividing the work into two segments. The section from Swan Road to south of County K is targeted for completion by late fall 2026.
The section from County K to County VV is scheduled for completion by fall 2027. That timeline means construction impacts on portions of the route are expected to extend beyond the 2026 construction season.
WisDOT has not announced a precise daily construction start date or quantified expected traffic delays. The current schedule identifies late summer 2026 as the expected beginning of construction.
WisDOT held a construction kickoff and public-involvement meeting July 15, 2026, at the Sussex Civic Center. The Village of Sussex also lists related local road closures and construction notices on its official website.
For people traveling WIS 164, the key changes will be reduced lanes during active work, temporary intersection and side-road closures, and a project schedule that continues into fall 2027. The route is expected to remain passable in both directions while crews complete the resurfacing, accessibility and signal work.
