Semi-Truck Accident Near Ellensburg
On January 28, 2026, a fully loaded double semi-truck veered off westbound I-90 near Ellensburg, landing in the Yakima River. The driver was cited for distracted driving. Fortunately, the incident did not block traffic.
Fatal Crash in Yakima
Late on January 29, 2026, a collision occurred at the intersection of S 16th Ave and W Washington Ave in Yakima. A 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to stop, striking a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. The driver of the Wrangler, a 55-year-old male from Seattle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 29-year-old driver of the Grand Cherokee, from Toppenish, showed signs of alcohol impairment and was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and driving with a suspended license. Speed was also considered a factor in the crash.
Bird Flu Detected in Yakima
The Yakima Health District announced on January 22, 2026, that bird flu was detected in a small flock of backyard chickens. While the overall risk to the public is low, individuals with close contact to infected animals are at an increased risk. Poultry owners are advised to take precautions, including covering coops to keep wild birds out and regularly cleaning and disinfecting equipment.
