Yonkers Daily Brief: Police Hunt Hit-and-Run Driver, Youth Safety Warnings, Arts & Events
Yonkers, NY – February 22, 2026 – Police intensify hit-and-run probe as officials warn teens over mall ‘takeovers’ and the city highlights new cultural events.
Hit-and-run investigation remains top concern
Yonkers police are still working with Long Island investigators to find the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run earlier this month. Officers responded to Van Cortlandt Park Avenue and Interval Place after a 21-year-old man was struck and left critically injured. He later died at a nearby hospital.
Detectives traced the vehicle to Nassau County, where it was recovered, but the person behind the wheel has not yet been located. A gun and ammunition were found at the Yonkers scene, though there is no indication the weapon was fired. Investigators say the encounter between the driver and the victim did not appear random, and they are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Police on alert after teen ‘takeover’ warnings
Law enforcement across Westchester County, including Yonkers, is increasing its visibility at malls and busy shopping areas during school recess. The move follows a chaotic teen mob incident at a Bronx mall earlier in the week that led to property damage and multiple arrests.
Yonkers police say they have well-practiced plans in place to respond quickly if any similar mass gatherings are organized online. Officials are stressing that disruptive “takeover” style events will be met with firm enforcement, and they are asking parents to talk with teens about the risks of joining such stunts.
Yonkers Philharmonic plans free ‘International Voices’ concert
On the community side, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra is inviting residents to a free performance titled ‘International Voices’ next month. The concert will feature works by composers such as Rossini, Boieldieu and Leonard Bernstein.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, at Saunders Trades and Technical High School on Palmer Road. Sponsored by the Fine Arts Orchestral Society of Yonkers, the program aims to make orchestral music accessible to families across the city and to showcase young local musicians alongside seasoned performers.
Teens and families get ready for college and career events
Local organizations are also using late February to focus on education and opportunity. A Dayspring College & Career Expo later this week is targeting Yonkers teens who are starting to plan for life after high school, with workshops and information on college admissions, financial aid and skilled trades.
Community leaders say the expo is part of a broader push to connect young people in Yonkers with practical guidance, internships and mentorship at a time when many families are watching costs and weighing different paths after graduation.
