U.S. job openings held at 7.4 million in June as hires stayed at 5.3 million
U.S. employers reported 7.4 million job openings in June 2026, little changed from May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hires held at 5.3 million, while total separations were little changed at 5.4 million.
Quits remained at 3.2 million and layoffs and discharges held at 1.8 million. The quits rate was 2.0%, and the layoffs and discharges rate was 1.1%.
Openings rose in transportation and fell in wholesale trade
The job-openings rate was 4.4%. Openings increased by 97,000 in transportation, warehousing and utilities and by 39,000 in the federal government.
Openings fell by 74,000 in wholesale trade, 55,000 in nondurable-goods manufacturing and 9,000 in mining and logging. Federal-government hires declined by 6,000.
May estimates were revised
The May estimate for job openings was revised down by 57,000 to 7.5 million. Hires were revised up by 82,000 to 5.3 million, and total separations were revised up by 159,000 to 5.3 million.
