DOE selects four projects for $73 million mining-tech push
The U.S. Department of Energy selected four project teams on September 9, 2026, for award negotiations involving $73 million in proposed federal funding for domestic mining technology.
The projects are part of DOE’s Mine of the Future initiative, which is intended to move systems from laboratory or bench-scale research into field testing. DOE says the testbeds could help reduce commercial-adoption risks, improve mine safety and productivity, train workers and support supply chains for critical minerals used in batteries, semiconductors, magnets, electronics, transportation equipment and other manufacturing.
Four teams selected for proposed proving grounds
The selected teams are Innovative Wireless Technologies Inc.; the University of Arizona; the Curators of the University of Missouri; and Southern Methodist University.
DOE identified project locations in Julian, West Virginia; Idaho Springs, Colorado; Blacksburg, Virginia; Sahuarita, Arizona; Rolla, Missouri; and Navasota, Texas. The locations are tied to different proposed proving-ground activities, rather than a single standardized system deployed at every site.
The technology areas listed by DOE include digital connectivity, automation, electrification, energy management, underground testing, advanced comminution, drilling and sensing. The proposed work covers systems used to operate mines, move and process materials, and monitor underground conditions.
Why field testing matters
Mining technologies can face a difficult transition between laboratory research and dependable commercial use. A system that performs in a controlled setting still has to be evaluated in the more complex conditions of an operating or simulated mining environment.
DOE’s proving-ground approach is intended to give researchers, engineers, mining stakeholders and workers places to evaluate technologies under real-world or repeatable field conditions. The department’s funding notice also describes workforce development and a minimum 20% cost-sharing requirement for the broader initiative.
For manufacturers, the issue extends beyond mining itself. DOE identifies critical minerals and materials as inputs used in batteries, semiconductors, magnets and electronics, while the department’s broader program connects them to energy, manufacturing and transportation supply chains. Technologies that improve extraction, processing, recovery or mine operations could eventually affect supply-chain resilience, although the selected projects do not guarantee higher production or lower prices.
What the announcement does not mean
The September 9 announcement is a project-selection decision, not evidence that final cooperative agreements have been executed. DOE said the teams were selected for award negotiations, so final terms, disbursements and implementation steps remain ahead.
The announcement also does not establish that new mines will open or that U.S. mineral output will increase in the near term. The immediate development is the planned testing of technologies intended to make future mining operations safer, more efficient or easier to commercialize.
What to watch next
The next milestones include final cooperative agreements, project cost sharing, equipment installation, workforce-training activity and results from field demonstrations. The key test will be whether the proving grounds produce systems that can be adopted commercially and deliver measurable improvements in safety, efficiency, mineral recovery or processing.
For consumers and manufacturers, this is a technology and supply-chain development rather than an immediate change in prices or mineral availability. Its effect on U.S. manufacturing will depend on what the projects demonstrate after negotiations end and field testing begins.
