Extreme heat can disrupt flights even under clear skies
A July 24 flight from Las Vegas shows how extreme heat can disrupt air travel even when skies are clear. American Airlines offered compensation to passengers who voluntarily gave up their seats after temperatures at Harry Reid International Airport reached 114 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Associated Press reporting published August 5, 2026.
The episode reflects a safety calculation, not a routine weather delay. Hot air is less dense, which can reduce an aircraft’s lift and engine thrust. Airlines may respond by removing passengers or cargo, loading less fuel, waiting for cooler conditions, delaying a departure or canceling a flight if no workable option remains.
Why hot air makes takeoff harder
Aircraft performance depends partly on the density of the air around them. In hot conditions, air becomes thinner. Wings must move through the air fast enough to generate sufficient lift, while jet engines also have less dense air available to produce thrust.
That can mean a longer takeoff roll, a slower climb and a lower allowable takeoff weight. The Federal Aviation Administration’s aviation guidance describes this as a density-altitude problem: the air behaves as though the aircraft were operating at a higher elevation than the airport’s physical elevation.
Density altitude is affected by temperature, airport elevation and humidity. The effects can add together, reducing aircraft performance and increasing the runway distance needed for takeoff. The FAA says high density altitude can also reduce climb performance.
Why some airports face tighter limits
The risk depends on more than the temperature reading. Airlines calculate takeoff limits using the outside temperature, airport elevation, runway length, aircraft model, aircraft weight and the fuel required for the route.
Phoenix, Las Vegas and Palm Springs are useful examples because very hot days are common. AP found that Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport averaged 43 days each year at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit from 2020 through 2025. Harry Reid International Airport averaged about 18 such days annually between 2020 and 2025, while Palm Springs International Airport averaged 55 days during the 2020s.
High elevation can compound the effect. AP reported that passengers at Denver International Airport were moved to later flights during hot weather in 2018. Runway length and airport design also matter. AP identified New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Washington’s Reagan National Airport as examples where design constraints can produce takeoff restrictions or weight limits during very hot conditions. That does not mean either airport is experiencing a current heat disruption.
What airlines can do when limits are reached
If an aircraft’s planned weight exceeds the safe limit for the conditions, an airline may remove cargo or ask passengers to volunteer for a later flight. It may reduce the fuel load and add a fuel stop, wait for cooler air or delay the departure. If those choices are not workable, the airline may cancel the service.
The FAA says the maximum takeoff temperature varies by aircraft make and model, aircraft weight and airport altitude. Airlines and flight crews are responsible for following the aircraft manufacturer’s operating manual. The FAA does not set one nationwide maximum temperature and does not cancel individual flights.
A weight restriction therefore does not mean an airline is operating beyond an aircraft’s limits. It means the aircraft’s allowable load is being recalculated for the conditions at that airport and for that specific flight.
How common could the problem become?
A 2017 study by researchers from Columbia University, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the Logistics Management Institute projected that some airports could see weight restrictions on 10% to 30% of flights departing during the hottest part of the day by midcentury if greenhouse-gas emissions continued to rise.
The study examined 19 airports around the world and found that short runways, high elevations and hotter climates created the greatest exposure. It is a research projection, not a current FAA rule and not a forecast that every U.S. airport will face those restrictions.
Actual decisions remain specific to the aircraft, route, airport and weather conditions on a given day. Rising temperatures may increase the number of days when performance limits become relevant, but heat alone does not automatically cause a delay or cancellation.
What travelers should do
Check the airline first for flight-specific information. The airline is the source for boarding changes, rebooking, baggage instructions and cancellation decisions.
For broader conditions, consult the FAA’s Daily Air Traffic Report and airport-status tools. The FAA says weather is the leading cause of flight delays and cancellations. The National Weather Service Aviation Weather Center provides aviation forecasts and guidance used by federal aviation officials, airlines and flight crews.
If you are flying from a hot, high-elevation or runway-constrained airport, allow extra time and keep connections flexible. Be prepared for a changed passenger or baggage load, a later departure or rebooking. Clear skies do not guarantee that heat will have no effect on a flight.

Airlines and airports may increasingly manage hot-weather risk through earlier departure windows, payload adjustments, schedule changes and other operational planning. For travelers, the practical lesson is simple: a flight can face a heat-related limitation without thunderstorms, snow or strong winds, so checking the airline and federal aviation resources before leaving for the airport matters.
