FAA Releases Roadmap for Safely Introducing Artificial Intelligence Into U.S. Aviation
The Federal Aviation Administration has developed a roadmap for introducing artificial intelligence into U.S. aviation, placing safety principles and future oversight priorities at the center of the technology’s adoption.
The roadmap, dated August 5, 2026, was developed with industry and other aviation regulators, according to the FAA. The agency said it is intended to establish guiding principles, priorities and plans for the safe introduction of artificial intelligence into aviation.
The development gives federal regulators, airlines, aircraft manufacturers and air-traffic organizations an early framework for considering how AI may be used in aviation. It does not, however, approve a specific AI system for passenger operations or authorize autonomous passenger flights.
What the roadmap covers
The FAA’s announcement places the roadmap within the agency’s broader work overseeing aviation safety and technology.
