Indiana VA patients face temporary online service limits during EHR switch
Veterans receiving care at three Indiana VA medical centers and associated clinics face temporary limits on several online care-management functions as the Department of Veterans Affairs prepares to launch its Federal Electronic Health Record system on August 22, 2026.
The affected facilities are the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne VA Medical Center, Marion VA Medical Center, VA Indiana clinics and VA Northern Indiana clinics. The changes affect routine online appointments, secure messaging and prescription requests; they do not eliminate phone, in-person or emergency care.
Key dates for Indiana VA patients
VA’s current central guidance lists the following schedule for My HealtheVet on VA.gov and the VA Health and Benefits mobile app:
- Online appointment cancellations: unavailable after midnight Eastern Time on August 11. Online cancellations are scheduled to return September 1.
- Secure messaging: unavailable after midnight Eastern Time on August 15. This includes prescription-renewal requests sent through secure messages. Messaging is scheduled to return August 24.
- Online prescription refills: available through midnight Eastern Time on August 18, then temporarily unavailable until August 24.
- Federal Electronic Health Record launch: scheduled for August 22.
Because Saturday, August 15, is the secure-messaging cutoff in VA’s central guidance, veterans with nonurgent questions or renewal requests should send them by midnight Eastern Time. Veterans who need a routine refill should submit an online request by August 18 rather than waiting for the transition.
What veterans can do during the pause
VA says active prescriptions will transfer automatically to the new system. The temporary interruption concerns online refill and renewal requests, not the automatic transfer of active prescriptions.
During the online pause, veterans can request refills or renewals during a VA appointment, mail a refill slip or call the pharmacy at their VA health facility. Veterans who need to cancel or change an appointment after online cancellations are unavailable should contact their care team or local facility by phone.
VA also advises patients to check their mailing address, especially if they temporarily relocate. Under the new system, patients can maintain a residential address and a mailing address, but not a dated temporary address. Veterans who receive prescriptions or other correspondence by mail may need to update the mailing address and change it back later.
Appointments may be limited around the launch
VA Northern Indiana Health Care System says appointment availability may be reduced around the transition. VA’s central guidance also warns that appointments may take longer while providers and staff learn the new system.
Patients may notice differences in appointment letters, after-visit summaries and care-team names after the launch. VA says new care-team names will be sent through secure messaging on August 24.
A local Northern Indiana advisory published in July used slightly different date ranges for some service pauses. This article uses the current central VA guidance for the Indiana facilities, which lists the secure-messaging cutoff as after midnight Eastern Time on August 15 and the online-refill cutoff as after midnight Eastern Time on August 18.
Part of VA’s restarted EHR rollout
Indiana is part of VA’s broader electronic-record modernization effort. VA’s June deployment announcement identified the Fort Wayne, Marion and Roudebush medical centers for an August 2026 rollout after earlier 2026 deployments in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky.
The Government Accountability Office reported in June that VA operates a complex scheduling environment involving multiple systems, including older VistA platforms and newer Oracle Health systems. GAO said the EHR rollout had faced technical and performance issues and that veterans had experienced problems with online appointment requests, confirmations and duplicate reminders. That oversight report provides broader context, but it does not establish that the Indiana launch has failed or that disruptions will exceed VA’s published plan.
Veterans with facility-specific questions should contact their local Indiana VA health facility. For urgent or emergency medical needs, use emergency services; the temporary online limits apply to routine care-management functions.
