Justice Department Publishes Government-Wide Fiscal 2025 FOIA Summary

The Justice Department’s Office of Information Policy published a government-wide summary of federal agencies’ fiscal 2025 Freedom of Information Act reports on July 2, 2026. The release provides a current federal baseline for how agencies handle public-records requests, including their efforts to improve operations and facilitate disclosure.

The department had published agency-level fiscal 2025 annual FOIA data on May 7. Federal agencies are required to report on FOIA administration and steps taken to improve disclosure. The Justice Department’s annual assessment combines agency Chief FOIA Officer Reports with Annual FOIA Report data.

The public listing for the government-wide summary does not identify the national totals for requests, backlogs, processing times or disclosure rates. It therefore establishes the reporting release without, by itself, showing whether FOIA performance improved or worsened across the federal government.

The National Archives’ Office of Government Information Services, the federal FOIA ombuds office, separately published its 2026 annual report covering fiscal 2025. OGIS held an open annual meeting on Aug. 4, 2026, where members of the public could submit oral and written comments under the FOIA statute. Meeting materials were to be posted afterward.
