NASA Begins Installing Engines for Artemis III’s 2027 Mission
NASA has begun installing the four engines that will power the Artemis III Space Launch System rocket, marking a major assembly milestone for the agency’s planned 2027 crewed demonstration mission.
Technicians began the work on August 24, 2026, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA reported the milestone on August 27, saying engine installation is advancing alongside solid-booster stacking, Orion spacecraft integration and astronaut training.
The work moves the rocket through a major assembly phase, but it does not guarantee a 2027 launch. Artemis III also depends on progress involving commercial human-landing systems, testing, mission integration and crew-safety reviews.
What changed at Kennedy Space Center
The four RS-25 engines are being installed in the core stage of the Artemis III SLS rocket. NASA said each engine weighs approximately 7,700 pounds and produces nearly 500,000 pounds of thrust.
The installation follows the mating of the engine section with the upper portion of the core stage earlier in summer 2026. NASA said teams will continue installing the remaining engines and integrating propulsion and electrical systems throughout the stage.
The RS-25 work is significant because the engines must be connected to the stage’s broader systems before the rocket can proceed through later testing and launch-preparation activities. It is an important readiness step, not a final launch decision.
Boosters, Orion and crew training are also advancing
NASA said stacking of the SLS solid-booster motor segments is more than halfway complete. The Orion crew and service modules have also been integrated, with electrical and fluid-system checks underway.
The four-person Artemis III crew has begun systems, emergency, water-survival and integrated flight-control training. The crew consists of NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio, along with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.
NASA said the crew is also training with commercial human-landing-system providers. The preparation covers Orion operations, rendezvous procedures, emergency response and coordination with mission controllers.
Artemis III is not planned as the first lunar landing
Under NASA’s current architecture, Artemis III is scheduled for 2027 as a crewed low-Earth-orbit demonstration. NASA says the mission will carry four astronauts aboard Orion and demonstrate systems needed for later lunar landings, including rendezvous and docking work with one or both commercial human-landing systems.
NASA’s current chronology says the commercial landers being tested are being developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin. It does not establish a final provider selection or a guaranteed docking sequence for the mission.
NASA identifies Artemis IV, targeted for early 2028, as the first Artemis lunar-landing mission under the revised plan. Artemis III’s role is therefore to test key systems in Earth orbit before the program attempts its next planned crewed lunar landing.
Why the schedule remains conditional
Independent oversight continues to identify risks in the commercial lander portion of the program. A NASA Office of Inspector General report published March 10, 2026, found schedule delays, technical and integration challenges, testing gaps and unresolved issues involving crew-survival analysis.
The OIG said NASA remains responsible for crew safety and reported that the agency would not have the capability to rescue astronauts stranded in space or on the lunar surface after a catastrophic lander event. The office made five recommendations addressing program management and crew safety.
The Government Accountability Office has also described changes to Artemis project scopes, contracts and cost and schedule baselines. Its 2026 assessment says the current human-landing-system baseline did not include the newly added low-Earth-orbit docking and rendezvous demonstration and that contract changes could create additional cost or schedule effects.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said on August 14 that he was “extremely confident” Artemis III would launch in 2027, according to Spaceflight Now. That statement reflects NASA leadership’s expectation, not a completed readiness determination.
The engine installation shows that flight hardware is moving through assembly. It does not establish a specific launch date, a final lander selection or completed crew-safety certification.
What to watch next
The next meaningful indicators will include completion of SLS booster stacking and core-stage integration, Orion testing, commercial-lander demonstrations, updated NASA cost and schedule baselines, and progress on the OIG’s safety recommendations.
For now, the Artemis III engine work is tangible progress toward the 2027 mission. The larger question is whether the rocket, spacecraft, landers, ground systems and safety reviews can all reach their required milestones on a compatible schedule.
