NASA’s Crew-13 Briefing Puts Space Station Crew Flights in Focus
NASA and its international partners will brief reporters Monday, August 3, on the planned SpaceX Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station, with launch targeted for no earlier than mid-September 2026.
The two briefings are scheduled from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston at noon and 2 p.m. Eastern time. NASA says the events are Crew-13’s final media availability before the crew travels to Kennedy Space Center in Florida for launch, but they are not a launch authorization or a fixed launch-date announcement.
The schedule gives the public a closer look at how NASA is maintaining regular U.S. crew rotations while Boeing’s Starliner remains uncertified. NASA’s Inspector General says the situation creates longer-term transportation and staffing challenges for the station, rather than an immediate emergency.
What NASA is planning
Crew-13 is planned to carry NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov to the station.
Watkins is assigned as commander, Delaney as pilot, and Kutryk and Teteryatnikov as mission specialists. The four-person crew is scheduled to fly aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
After arrival, Crew-13 is expected to join Expedition 75 and support long-duration science investigations and technology demonstrations aboard the station. NASA describes those activities as planned mission objectives, not completed results.
Why Crew-13 moved forward
NASA said in April that it was moving Crew-13 forward from November to help increase the frequency of U.S. crew-rotation missions to the station.
NASA later included the change in a broader update to the station’s 2026 flight plan. The agency said launch opportunities would remain subject to operational readiness, station traffic, crew safety and the need to maximize research aboard the orbiting laboratory.
That makes “no earlier than mid-September” a planning target rather than a promise that the rocket will launch during a particular week. NASA will issue later readiness and scheduling updates before a firm launch date is set.
Why Starliner remains part of the story
The schedule change also highlights NASA’s current reliance on SpaceX for U.S.-based crew transportation to the station. A June 30 report from NASA’s Office of Inspector General said SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and Falcon 9 had human-rating certification and had transported crew to and from the station across 12 crewed missions.
The report said Boeing’s Starliner remained uncertified for routine crewed missions. It found that helium leaks and propulsion-system failures remained unresolved as of March 2026, while parachute anomalies continued to require monitoring. NASA was uncertain when the remaining testing would be completed or when Starliner human-rating certification could be obtained.
The Inspector General said certification will likely be delayed to 2027, leaving a limited period before the station’s planned decommissioning in 2030. The report also said NASA lacks enough currently contracted flights to fully crew the station through that date and will need additional missions from Boeing or SpaceX.
Those findings do not mean NASA has canceled Starliner. They describe a program that remains in certification work after technical and schedule problems, while SpaceX is currently the only certified U.S. commercial provider conducting routine crewed station flights.
What to watch next
The immediate dates are the August 3 briefings, NASA’s later launch-readiness reviews and the eventual Florida launch attempt. The agency will need to confirm that the Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 rocket, station traffic plan and crew are ready before establishing a firm launch date.
For readers, the broader issue is continuity. Crew-13 is a planned mission, but its earlier placement in the schedule reflects NASA’s effort to keep U.S. rotations frequent while it manages a two-provider commercial-crew program in which Boeing’s second system remains delayed and uncertified.
