Nationwide raw pet-food recall raises Salmonella, Listeria concerns

The Food and Drug Administration posted a nationwide voluntary recall on August 28, 2026, for two Northwest Naturals raw pet-food products after testing found Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes in specified lots.

The recall affects products made by Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon. FDA said no illnesses had been reported in connection with the recall as of the notice, but contaminated pet food can expose animals and people through feeding, handling and contact with bowls, utensils or other surfaces.

What was recalled

Consumers should check the brand, product name, lot number, best-by date and UPC before deciding whether a package is affected.

• Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe, sold as cat food and a protein topper for dogs in a 2-pound bag. The recalled product is lot B-5, with a best-by date of 01/26/2028 and UPC 087316384956.
• Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe in a 6-pound bag. The recalled product is lot B-19, with a best-by date of 01/25/2028 and UPC 087316380392.

The FDA notice does not cover every Northwest Naturals product. It identifies only the two products and lots listed above.

What testing found

FDA testing found Salmonella in samples of the Frozen Chicken Recipe. Samples of the Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

The products were distributed to retail stores nationwide. The test findings concern the specified recalled lots; they do not establish that every unit of either product was contaminated.

This is a voluntary recall, not an outbreak announcement or a government-ordered seizure. FDA reported no illnesses linked to the recall as of August 28, but consumers should still follow the recall instructions.

What pet owners should do now

Do not feed either recalled product to a pet. Return unused food to the place of purchase for a full refund.

After handling the food or anything it touched, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Clean and sanitize pet bowls, utensils, counters, freezers, refrigerators and storage areas that may have been exposed. Keep raw pet food separate from human food and away from infants and young children.

Symptoms to watch for

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever; diarrhea may sometimes be bloody. Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause fever, muscle aches, tiredness, nausea and diarrhea, and more serious illness can include confusion, loss of balance or convulsions.

Listeria can be particularly serious for pregnant people, newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems. Contact a health-care provider if concerning symptoms develop after handling the product, especially if someone in a higher-risk group may have been exposed.

Pets exposed to Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes may develop lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, reduced appetite or abdominal pain. Some infected pets may carry the bacteria without obvious illness and could spread it to other animals or people. Contact a veterinarian if a pet ate the recalled food and becomes ill.

Consumers should watch for further FDA or company updates, including any added lots, reported illnesses or changes to the recall instructions.
