Portland Gas and Diesel Prices Diverge Again After July 31 AAA Check
Regular gas slipped to $4.719 per gallon in AAA’s July 31 Portland-area check while diesel rose to $5.533, continuing separate short-term trends.
Regular gas eased while diesel increased in the latest Portland-area price check, giving commuters and commercial operators two different fuel trends to watch heading into the weekend.
AAA’s July 31, 2026, Portland-Vancouver (OR only) average lists regular gasoline at $4.719 per gallon and diesel at $5.533 per gallon. The figures are metro averages, not a station-by-station price for Portland and not a full Oregon-Washington average.
Regular gas slips slightly
Regular gasoline fell 0.2 cents from AAA’s July 30 check. It is also down 0.5 cents from a week earlier and 12.9 cents below the month-ago average of $4.848.
The longer comparison remains less favorable for drivers. Portland-Vancouver (OR only) regular gas is up 63.4 cents from the year-ago average of $4.085 per gallon.
That means a driver filling a 15-gallon tank would pay about $70.79 at the current metro average, before any station-specific difference. The small daily decline may not be noticeable on one fill-up, but the month-over-month decrease is more meaningful for households that fill up frequently or drive long distances for work.
Diesel moves higher
Diesel went in the opposite direction. AAA lists the July 31 average at $5.533 per gallon, up 0.2 cents from July 30.
Diesel is still 0.5 cents below the week-ago average and 10.3 cents below the month-ago figure of $5.636. Compared with a year ago, however, diesel is up $1.018 per gallon from $4.515.
The diesel increase matters most for businesses and workers operating heavier vehicles. Contractors, delivery operators, landscapers, freight companies and service businesses may see fuel costs remain a larger operating concern even as the monthly average has eased.
What the split means locally
For Portland-area commuters, the latest check suggests little immediate relief at the pump despite the modest daily decline in regular gas. Weekend travelers may benefit if the monthly easing continues, but individual station prices can vary substantially from the metro average.
Households that depend on delivery services or locally provided work may also feel diesel costs indirectly if operators adjust routes, fuel surcharges or service pricing. Those are potential effects to watch, not documented changes tied specifically to this July 31 check.
Broader fuel-market context
The U.S. Energy Information Administration‘s latest weekly release, dated July 28 and covering July 27 prices, put regular gasoline at $4.096 per gallon nationally and $4.662 for the West Coast excluding California. Its comparable diesel figures were $5.313 nationally and $5.545 for the West Coast excluding California.
Those figures provide broader regional and national context, but AAA’s Portland-Vancouver (OR only) row is the relevant local measure for this update. The Portland regular-gas average is above the national weekly figure, while the local diesel average is close to the latest West Coast excluding California measure.
