NHTSA Opens Investigation Into About 1.2 Million Tesla Vehicles
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation involving approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles after consumer reports alleging unintended acceleration or related problems with driver control.
The investigation was opened on or about Aug. 3, 2026, and covers Tesla Model 3 vehicles from model years 2018 through 2020 and Model Y vehicles from model years 2021 through 2023. The vehicles were sold in the United States.
The federal action begins a safety review; it does not amount to a recall or establish that the vehicles contain a confirmed defect. The reports describe alleged incidents, and the investigation does not mean that every vehicle in the affected population has experienced the reported problem.
What NHTSA is examining
The reported concerns involve vehicles allegedly accelerating unintentionally or creating related loss-of-control problems. Those reports prompted the agency to examine whether the incidents point to a safety defect affecting some or all of the covered vehicles.
The vehicle population includes two of Tesla’s major models across several model years. The Model 3 years identified in the investigation are 2018, 2019 and 2020. The Model Y years are 2021, 2022 and 2023. Together, the investigation covers approximately 1.2 million vehicles.
For drivers, the immediate significance is that a federal agency is evaluating a potential safety issue across a large group of vehicles rather than announcing a completed finding. No recall, repair remedy or final investigative conclusion had been announced when the investigation opened.
NHTSA’s review can involve examining consumer complaints, manufacturer communications and other information relevant to vehicle safety. The agency’s investigation and recall authorities provide a framework for determining whether further action is necessary.
Possible outcomes
An investigation can result in a request for a recall, other manufacturer action or closure without a recall. Those outcomes are materially different. A recall would be a separate action identifying the vehicles involved, the safety defect and the remedy available to owners.
An engineering remedy could address a confirmed problem if the agency determines that one exists and that corrective action is required. A decision to close the investigation without a recall would mean that NHTSA did not pursue a recall through this inquiry. Neither outcome had been announced at the time the investigation opened.
NHTSA also says that a vehicle-safety recall does not expire once it is issued. That rule matters if a future recall results from the investigation: owners would need to follow the agency’s instructions for any available remedy rather than treating the recall as something that ends after a fixed period.
How the investigation fits into the recall system
The Tesla inquiry comes within a U.S. vehicle-safety system that handles recalls involving many manufacturers and types of defects. NHTSA reported 997 vehicle-safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States during 2025.
That 2025 total includes recalls across the broader U.S. vehicle market. It does not show that the Tesla investigation produced a recall, and it does not establish that the vehicles under review are part of that earlier figure.
The investigation’s importance will depend on what NHTSA determines about the reported acceleration and control concerns. A federal finding could lead to a recall or another manufacturer response affecting the covered Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The agency could also close the inquiry without seeking a recall.
Until NHTSA reaches a conclusion, the reported incidents remain allegations under investigation rather than an established defect finding. The next major development would be an agency determination, a manufacturer action or a formal recall if the agency concludes that a safety remedy is warranted.
