Santa Rosa Island camping remains closed as limited day use continues

Limited day visits have resumed on Santa Rosa Island after a wildfire burned nearly 40% of the island, but the National Park Service says all overnight use remains prohibited through at least September 15, 2026.

The fire burned between May 15 and June 4. In a recovery update last updated July 31, the NPS said all Water Canyon Campground reservations through September 15 have been canceled and that backcountry camping in the island’s southeastern quadrant will remain closed for the rest of the 2026 recreation season.

September 15 is the earliest stated end of the current overnight closure, not a guaranteed reopening date. The park says access decisions will be reassessed as recovery work continues.

What visitors can do now

Day use resumed July 1, but visitors must follow individual trail, road and shoreline restrictions. The NPS lists portions of Cherry Canyon Trail and the Coastal Trail, the beach near Water Canyon or the pier, and the historic schoolhouse area among the available day-use options.

Burned areas remain closed, as do shorelines adjacent to the burned area. The restrictions include areas near Johnsons Lee, Ford Point and Southeast Anchorage.

Torrey Pines Trail is closed. Water Canyon is closed upstream from the beach, and a segment of Cherry Canyon Trail near Water Canyon Campground is also closed. Trails toward Carrington Point, Lobo Canyon and Black Mountain are open but generally too long for most visitors to complete during a typical day trip, according to the NPS.

Separate wildlife-protection restrictions also apply. The park closes back beaches and sand dunes between Skunk Point and just north of East Point to protect nesting snowy plovers from March 1 through September 15. Sandy Point is closed year-round to protect seal rookeries, and the China Camp-to-Cluster Point area is closed to protect sensitive resources. Beach camping is closed through August 15 because elephant seals remain on Santa Rosa’s beaches.

Plan carefully before traveling

Visitors without a private boat must arrange transportation with a commercial operator. Island Packers lists day trips to Santa Rosa Island from Ventura Harbor, but travelers should confirm current availability before making plans. The NPS says passengers typically have three to four hours on the island during an organized day trip.

The recovery page says water and flush toilets are available in the ranch area, with no other facilities available on the island. Conditions can change while crews work around damaged trails, infrastructure and burned areas.

Normal Santa Rosa camping is a primitive, reservation-based experience that requires advance transportation planning and carrying gear from the landing area to the campground. That overnight experience is unavailable while the closure remains in effect.

Why restrictions remain

Park staff are addressing hazards including burned asbestos, fallen barbed-wire fencing and unstable trails. Recovery work also includes erosion control, protection and stabilization of cultural resources, and repair or removal of damaged structures and infrastructure.

The NPS said in its June 18 reopening announcement that preliminary assessments indicated recovery would take several years. The park has not declared the island fully recovered, and decisions about broader access will continue to be made periodically.

Before you go

Assume overnight camping is unavailable through at least September 15, 2026.
Expect Water Canyon reservations through that date to be canceled, not simply delayed.
Check the NPS fire-recovery and current-conditions pages immediately before departure.
Confirm boat availability with Island Packers or another transportation provider.
Stay out of burned areas, closed shorelines and signed-closed trails.
Give wildlife extra space and clean hiking, camping and boating gear before arrival to reduce the spread of invasive species.
