The U.S. Department of Justice plans to deploy election monitors in Lansing during Michiganโs Aug. 4, 2026 primary, placing the cityโs election administration under federal observation as voters prepare for the final days of voting.
The department says the monitoring in Lansing, Detroit and East Lansing is intended to assess compliance with federal election laws and election-record requirements. The planned monitoring is not a finding that fraud or misconduct occurred in Lansing.
Federal request covered past and current election information
According to reporting on letters sent by the Justice Department to local officials, the department requested Lansingโs precinct lists from the November 2024 election, along with precinct and polling-place lists for the Aug. 4 primary.
The approved source material does not specify how many monitors will be assigned to Lansing or which polling locations they will visit.
Lansing Mayor Andy Schor and City Clerk Chris Swope said allegations concerning long lines and abnormal procedures were false. Their statement addresses allegations cited in connection with the federal request; it does not alter the Justice Departmentโs stated plan to monitor the primary.
Final early-voting day is Aug. 3
Lansing is among Michigan jurisdictions offering an additional in-person early-voting day on Monday, Aug. 3, one day before Election Day. The Michigan Secretary of Stateโs office announced the added availability as part of statewide early in-person voting for the August primary.
Eligible residents can register and vote in person at the clerkโs office through 8 p.m. on Aug. 4 if they provide proof of residency. That deadline gives voters who have not yet registered a same-day option on Election Day.
What is on Lansingโs ballot
The Aug. 4 state primary is the next scheduled election listed by Lansingโs election office. Lansing voters will see state and federal nominations, as well as a City of Lansing ballot question and several Ingham County millage proposals.
The election remains at the pre-results stage. Lansingโs election page lists the contests and ballot questions, but does not yet provide results because Election Day is Aug. 4.
For voters, the immediate dates are Aug. 3 for the additional in-person early-voting opportunity and Aug. 4 for the primary itself. For election officials, the primary will proceed with the Justice Departmentโs planned monitoring alongside the cityโs regular administration of voting and ballot processing.
