D.C. approves up to $300 million for Stadium-Armory upgrades
The D.C. Council approved emergency measures Oct. 6 authorizing up to $300 million for capacity improvements at Stadium-Armory Metro station and $5 million for planning the first phase of the proposed Gold Line bus rapid transit service. Both measures passed unanimously, The Washington Post reported.
The station work would address capacity at street, mezzanine and platform levels through a reimbursable agreement with Metro. It is intended to support travel to the planned RFK campus and stadium, whose opening is projected for 2030. The Council says the Gold Line would serve the stadium campus, follow Benning Road and extend west toward Union Station and beyond.
The Gold Line allocation covers planning, environmental work and outreach—not construction or service. Councilmember Charles Allen said the initial funding would support planning and design to assess what is viable, alongside transportation options he described as equitable and accessible. The station agreement identifies fiscal years 2026 through 2030, while the Gold Line planning phase is identified for fiscal years 2027 and 2028. The vote does not itself complete station work or fund Gold Line construction or operation.
