D.C. Medicaid members in Wellpoint automatically moved to AmeriHealth Caritas

District of Columbia Medicaid members enrolled in Wellpoint DC were automatically assigned to AmeriHealth Caritas DC effective Aug. 1, 2026, the Department of Health Care Finance says.

The change applies to the District Medicaid Managed Care Program and alters the plan administration connected to affected members’ coverage. The agency’s notice does not state how many beneficiaries are included in the reassignment.

For members, the immediate issue is confirming how the new plan handles existing care. The District’s notice does not say whether all providers who participated in Wellpoint DC participate in AmeriHealth Caritas DC, and it does not specify whether every member must complete an additional step after the automatic assignment.

What members should check

Beneficiaries should review the information associated with their Medicaid coverage and confirm whether their doctors and other providers are in the new plan’s network. They should also verify that prescriptions and referrals remain properly arranged and review any identification materials connected with the coverage.

Those checks are practical consequences of a managed-care plan change. The agency also identifies a separate change involving adult noncitizen eligibility. That change begins Oct. 1, 2026, according to another DHCF notice.

The Oct. 1 eligibility date is distinct from the Aug. 1 managed-care assignment. The approved information does not establish that the adult noncitizen eligibility changes are part of the Wellpoint DC-to-AmeriHealth Caritas DC transition. The two developments should therefore not be treated as one policy change.

Economic context

The plan reassignment comes amid economic conditions that may affect the broader public-service environment in the District. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a preliminary June 2026 unemployment rate of 6.0% and 720,800 total nonfarm jobs.

BLS also reported that total nonfarm employment was down 4.8% from a year earlier in June. Those figures describe the District’s economic context; they do not establish a cause-and-effect relationship with the Medicaid plan reassignment.

For now, the confirmed development is the automatic assignment of Wellpoint DC members to AmeriHealth Caritas DC effective Aug. 1.
