Kentucky State Fair opens Aug. 20 with America250 programming

The 122nd Kentucky State Fair opens Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, adding an America250 exhibition and themed competitions to the regular lineup of concerts, exhibits, rides and agricultural events.

The 11-day fair runs through Sunday, Aug. 30, at 937 Phillips Lane. The Kentucky Historical Society describes the fair as a gathering that draws Kentuckians from all 120 counties. Officials and local reporting have cited an estimated $15 million economic impact for Louisville, but that figure is a projection or expectation, not a completed or audited post-event result.

America250 exhibition highlights Kentucky history

The Kentucky Historical Society is partnering with the fair on United We Stand at 250, a special exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The exhibition will include the Colossal Kentucky Board Game, videos, displays and interactive media focused on Kentucky chapters in the nation’s story. More than a dozen America250 competition departments also are planned, with examples including cakes, quilts and crop or seed art.

The programming gives visitors a history-focused option alongside the fair’s livestock, agriculture, food, entertainment and competitive exhibits. The broader schedule includes family activities, music tents, rides and the World’s Championship Horse Show in Freedom Hall from Aug. 22 through Aug. 29.

Concerts are included with fair admission

The Texas Roadhouse Concert Series is scheduled for Aug. 20-29 in Lot L near Broadbent Arena. Concert gates open at 6:30 p.m., and performances begin at 8 p.m. Fair admission includes the concerts, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The lineup includes Cooper Alan and JD Shelburne on Aug. 20; Midnight Star and Digital Underground on Aug. 21; Black Stone Cherry and The Goldy LockS Band on Aug. 22; Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder with T.G. Sheppard and Wade Hayes on Aug. 23; Cain and Ben Fuller on Aug. 24; the Happy Together Tour on Aug. 25; Ernest and Alex Miller on Aug. 26; Boys Like Girls on Aug. 27; Hairball on Aug. 28; and Foghat with the Kentucky Headhunters on Aug. 29.

There is no concert in the series on Aug. 30, the fair’s final day. The official FAQ says exhibits, rides and attractions will remain open that day, although indoor and outdoor hours vary.

Admission, parking and family costs

Online admission is listed at $12 and includes parking. Participating Kroger stores in Kentucky and Southern Indiana are selling $9 tickets, with parking included, through Wednesday, Aug. 19. Those tickets are available at store customer-service counters.

Children 5 and under are admitted free. Admission does not cover every possible expense: rides, food, merchandise and some special attractions cost extra. The fair’s ticket information lists Thrill Ville as a separate add-on, with a $30 wristband listed on the current ticket page and a $35 price during the fair in the operator’s advance ticket information. Evening performances of the World’s Championship Horse Show also require separate tickets.

Fair gates open at 7 a.m. daily, but indoor halls and exhibit areas have different hours. On Sunday, Aug. 30, some barns and exhibit areas close earlier than outdoor areas. Visitors should check the official hours and daily schedule before traveling.

Why the fair matters beyond Louisville

The fair brings residents, exhibitors, agricultural groups, vendors and visitors from across Kentucky to the Kentucky Exposition Center. Spectrum News 1 reported that officials expect this year’s event to produce about $15 million in economic impact. Kentucky State Fair materials also identify a similar operator-produced estimate that includes the horse show.

Those figures describe projected or estimated activity, not final results from the 2026 fair. The practical effects for residents will vary by whether they attend, exhibit, compete, work at the event or operate a nearby business.

What visitors should check before going

Before leaving, visitors should confirm the latest hours, maps, concert details, parking information and any weather-related changes through the Kentucky State Fair’s official channels. The fair says tickets are not refundable and does not provide rain checks for weather-related cancellations or changes.

Students attending the fair may also qualify for one excused school absence under Kentucky law, subject to the required application and school procedures.
