World Athletics U20 championships bring an international event to Eugene this week
Eugeneโs Hayward Field will become the center of international track and field competition Wednesday, Aug. 5, when the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships begin at the University of Oregon.
The five-day meet runs through Sunday, Aug. 9. World Athletics identifies it as the 21st edition of the under-20 world championships, with more than 1,700 athletes from nearly 200 countries expected to participate.
Competition begins Wednesday
All competition is scheduled for Hayward Field in Eugene. The published timetable calls for morning and afternoon sessions from Wednesday through Saturday, followed by a daytime final session on Sunday.
Opening-day finals include the menโs shot put, the womenโs 5,000 meters and the menโs 5,000 meters. Wednesdayโs schedule also includes the final of the mixed 4ร400-meter relay, which World Athletics says is being contested for the first time in the history of the U20 Championships.
The schedule is a published plan, not a record of completed results or a final account of which athletes will compete in every event. Residents and visitors should check the official timetable for the latest session and event details before attending.
Sunday will feature 15 championship finals
The final session on Sunday, Aug. 9, is scheduled to crown world champions in 15 events. That gives the meet a concentrated closing day after four days of qualifying rounds, preliminary events and finals.
The competition is designed for athletes under 20 and serves as a global championship for emerging track and field competitors. The expected field will bring representatives from across the world to Oregon, although the published participation estimate should not be treated as a final entry list.
Hayward Field has hosted major global meets
The Eugene venue previously hosted the 2014 World U20 Championships and the 2022 World Athletics Championships. The 2026 meet continues Hayward Fieldโs role as a host site for major international track and field competitions.
The key dates for the Oregon event are Wednesday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 9, at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The official World Athletics timetable remains the best source for current session information as the championships approach.
