Unhoused Man Dies of Hypothermia Amid Winter Storm
Louisville, KY — January 29, 2026 — A 55-year-old man, Richard Marshall, was found outside in the Russell neighborhood during a severe winter storm and later pronounced dead at Jewish Hospital. The Jefferson County Coroner’s report listed his preliminary cause of death as ‘consistent with hypothermia.’
Mayor Craig Greenberg emphasized the dangerously low temperatures, stating, ‘There is literally ice in the Ohio River right now.’ He urged residents to check on loved ones, family, friends, and neighbors, highlighting the availability of resources for those without shelter during this winter storm. Multiple homeless shelters in Louisville have expanded their overnight capacity, and the city’s Homeless Engagement and Assessment Response (HEART) Team is offering assistance. Residents can call the HEART Team at (502) 574-5050 or use St. John Center’s online outreach referral form for help.
