Mardi Gras on Main closes streets this afternoon

The city’s Mardi Gras on Main celebration rolls through downtown this afternoon with a golf cart parade and evening street party. The parade is scheduled from 4 to 9 p.m., starting and ending near the county courthouse and looping along Easy Street, Main Street and East College Street.

City officials say East College Street will be closed much of the afternoon and evening, with no parking allowed along the route during the event window. Residents are encouraged to plan extra time if they normally drive through downtown and to use nearby side streets and public lots instead.

For those participating in the parade, organizers are stressing safety rules. Riders are asked to follow posted instructions, stay in their vehicles and avoid tossing beads or other items into the crowd.

Daytime events fill out the schedule

Before the parade, several local businesses are hosting themed events to draw people downtown. A late-morning brunch, early afternoon craft workshop and other gatherings are planned along North and Main streets, giving residents plenty of reasons to arrive early and linger.

Later in the day, a king cake contest is set to highlight local bakers, while an evening tribute concert at the Baker Center for the Arts aims to keep the crowd in the Mardi Gras spirit after the parade wraps up. Organizers expect a strong turnout, especially if the weather stays dry into the night.

Weekend wraps with Sunday gatherings

Today’s festivities cap a full weekend of activities that began Friday night with live music and pre-Mardi Gras events around town. On Sunday, a community chicken plate fundraiser on County Road 537 is expected to attract football fans looking for an easy meal ahead of the big game.

Residents who plan to be out and about are encouraged to leave early, watch for detours near downtown and keep an eye on social media and city alerts for any last-minute changes to the schedule.
