Ruston daily briefing: Saturday, February 7

Here’s a quick look at what’s happening in Ruston and around Lincoln Parish as the weekend gets rolling.

Water work on North Vienna and nearby streets

City crews spent Thursday repairing a significant water leak affecting North Vienna Street and several nearby avenues, including East Alabama, Florida, Georgia and North Bonner. Water service in that area was scheduled to be interrupted starting at 9 a.m. Thursday and to remain off until repairs were complete. If you live or work along those streets, you may still see crews in the area and occasional low pressure while lines stabilize.

Busy Saturday of markets, games and community events

Today’s calendar is packed across town. The Ruston Farmers Market is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on East Mississippi Avenue, giving residents a chance to pick up winter produce, baked goods and locally made items.

At the Lincoln Parish Library, a video game meetup hosted by the local fighting game community runs from late morning into the afternoon, offering a casual space for players to gather. On the sports front, both Louisiana Tech and Grambling State have home basketball games this afternoon, bringing extra traffic near the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston and the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in Grambling.

Just up the road in Dubach, Big Creek Trade Days continues through the weekend, drawing shoppers and vendors from across the region and adding another option for folks looking to get out of the house after recent winter weather.

Looking ahead to next week

Community groups and local government will be back in full swing this coming week. A free “Lunch on Us” community meal is planned Monday at a downtown church, and a local Toastmasters club will meet that evening at the Louisiana Center for the Blind for those interested in improving public speaking.

Later in the week, parish police jury committees and the full jury are scheduled to take up regular business, while the area business community prepares for the annual chamber awards banquet and a mid-month hazardous waste collection and recycling event. Residents who like to plan ahead can also find food-focused classes and creative meetups on the calendar, including a cooking class at the farmers market site and an arts gathering in downtown Ruston.

Weather remains seasonably cool for early February, with typical highs in the upper 50s and chilly, damp nights. If you are heading to outdoor events or evening games, plan on a jacket and be prepared for occasional light rain.
