City updates: water, permits, and inspections

Water system testing continues through Feb. 10 across the city’s network, with crews checking pressure so they can spot weak points and plan upgrades. Residents may notice brief fluctuations but no widespread outages are expected.

The permit center will close Feb. 10–12 for staff training, so builders and homeowners are being asked to plan ahead for permit applications and questions. Online tools remain available while the counter is closed.

Building inspections have resumed on Fridays for the first time in a while, giving contractors a full Monday–Friday window. Inspections will pause again on Presidents Day, Feb. 16.

Schools in final push before Feb. 10 vote

Monroe School District is in the home stretch before the Feb. 10 special election, when voters will decide on a renewal Educational Programs and Operations levy and a new school construction bond.

The renewal levy would continue an existing tax that helps fund staff, safety, extracurriculars, and classroom support that are not fully covered by state dollars. District leaders say more than 15 percent of the operating budget depends on this local measure.

The proposed construction bond would pay for safety and security upgrades, major maintenance, and modernization projects, including a new home for Sky Valley Education Center and further work at Frank Wagner and Salem Woods elementaries. Supporters argue the package is needed to keep facilities safe and up to date, while critics have raised concerns about overall cost and the scale of the Sky Valley project.

Weekend sign-waving and Super Bowl gathering

Supporters of the bond and levy spent Saturday morning sign-waving at the intersection of Highway 2 and North Kelsey Street, encouraging residents to turn in ballots before Tuesday’s deadline.

On Sunday afternoon, French Creek Manor is set to host a community Super Bowl watch party, giving neighbors a chance to gather for the game close to home rather than driving into the metro area. Organizers are promoting it as a family-friendly way to wrap up the weekend.

Between city infrastructure work, a pivotal school vote, and local events, it’s a busy stretch in Monroe as residents juggle everyday routines with decisions that will shape the city’s next several years.
