Newark is digging out after the February 22–23 blizzard, with plows still working through secondary streets and the city emphasizing safety rules meant to keep emergency routes open.

1) Snow emergency rules, City Hall closure, and delayed services
The city’s snow removal emergency ordered drivers to clear designated snow emergency routes so plows and ambulances could move. Officials also temporarily shut City Hall and other municipal buildings on Monday, and suspended many non-emergency services. Trash and recycling pickup was disrupted, with residents urged to hold materials for the next scheduled collection rather than putting carts out in unsafe conditions.
For commuters, transit agencies began restoring service Tuesday but warned of modified schedules and lingering delays, including changes that funnel some rail service through Newark Penn Station. With deep snow still piled curb-to-curb in spots, the city also reminded residents that illegally parked or double-parked vehicles may be towed to keep streets passable.
2) Fatal shooting under investigation on Lexington Street
Public safety officials are investigating a weekend shooting that left a 62-year-old man dead. Police were called to Lexington Street in the early morning hours, found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound, and he later died at University Hospital. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact authorities.
3) Rutgers-Newark closes Golden Dome Athletic Center during storm period
At Rutgers University–Newark, the Golden Dome Athletic Center announced a weather-related closure for Sunday and Monday, with updates promised on reopening plans. The notice is one of several campus-level adjustments tied to the storm’s impact and ongoing cleanup.
