Newark keeps Code Red in place as extreme heat continues
Newark NJ – A Code Red heat warning runs through July 5, and officials are urging residents to take precautions as extreme heat and poor air quality raise health risks.
Newark is in a dangerous heat stretch this week. The City of Newark says Code Red runs from 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, through 8 a.m. Sunday, July 5. The National Weather Service also has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for Newark through 9 p.m. Friday, July 4.
City officials say temperatures could reach 102 degrees, with a heat index as high as 109. They also warned earlier this week about elevated ground-level ozone and unhealthy air for sensitive groups. The June 30 air quality alert ended that night, but it is part of the same public-health picture.
Residents are being told to limit time outside, drink water often, use air conditioning if possible, and check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be isolated. People with asthma, heart disease, lung disease, or other chronic conditions should be extra careful during the hottest part of the week.
The city says cooling centers and drop-in options are available for people who need help getting out of the heat.
