Spokane Daily: Deadly-force incident, two West Spokane fires, and a Sounders match coming to town
Spokane, WA – February 28, 2026 – Police deadly-force incident update, two accidental house fires, and a big Sounders match headed to town soon.
Spokane is heading into the weekend with several public-safety updates and a notable sports booking that will bring a national spotlight to the city this spring. Here is what to know this morning.
Police: Deadly-force incident tied to homicide investigation
Police said officers responded late Feb. 24 to a home on West Carlisle Avenue after information from a North Spokane homicide investigation pointed them to a suspect believed to be staying there. The city said SWAT and negotiators were brought in because investigators believed the person was armed.
After a warrant was obtained, police reported multiple attempts to contact the suspect. Police said the suspect was seen leaving and re-entering the home with what appeared to be a firearm, then later tried to flee through nearby yards while carrying what appeared to be a long gun. Police said an officer used deadly force, and the suspect died at the scene. No officers or bystanders were reported injured. The regional independent investigation team is expected to handle follow-up, with officer names and the deceased’s name to be released later by the appropriate agencies.
Two accidental fires contained in West Spokane
Firefighters reported two separate structure fires on Feb. 26, including a house fire on West Jackson Avenue and a detached-garage fire on West Nora Avenue. Crews said the first fire was contained in about 20 minutes and that no people were hurt. Firefighters also reported rescuing two cats, including one revived with oxygen on scene.
The second fire involved a detached garage, and investigators said a heat lamp in a chicken coop was the cause; firefighters reported multiple chickens died.
Sounders vs. Whitecaps match set for ONE Spokane Stadium
A Seattle vs. Vancouver Concacaf Champions Cup match is scheduled for March 18 at ONE Spokane Stadium. Organizers said the game is being played in Spokane because Lumen Field is unavailable during World Cup-related preparations this summer, making it a rare chance to see a high-stakes pro match on the east side of the state.
Context: 2025 ended with zero fatal police shootings
A separate report this week noted Spokane police went all of 2025 without a fatal police shooting, a sharp change from recent years. The new deadly-force incident underscores how quickly that picture can shift, even as department leaders emphasize de-escalation and training.
