Wichita Daily Local Headlines: Election Day prep, weekend shooting arrest, police training notice, storms ahead
Wichita, KS – March 2, 2026 – Sales tax vote nears, suspect arrested in weekend shooting, WPD training notice, and a cooler stormy forecast.
1) Election Day is Tuesday in Wichita
Voters inside Wichita city limits head to the polls Tuesday, March 3, for a special election on a proposed citywide 1% sales tax. Election officials list Election Day hours as 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with early in-person voting at the county election office ending at noon Monday.
To help people get to the polls, Wichita Transit announced free fixed-route bus and paratransit rides on Election Day, with no proof of voting required. If you use transit regularly, it is also a good heads-up that some regular polling locations have been reassigned for this election.
2) Arrest made in a weekend shooting
Police say a 21-year-old Wichita man was arrested in connection with an early Saturday shooting near the 400 block of N. Clara. The victim, a 38-year-old man, was reported in critical condition but expected to survive. Investigators said the shooting followed an argument.
3) Heads-up: ceremonial gunfire training Monday
Residents in northeast Wichita may hear ceremonial gunfire and see an increased police presence Monday as officers conduct Honor Guard training at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex. Police emphasized it is planned training, and the area used for practice will be sectioned off.
4) Weather: an active week for showers and storms
Forecasters are tracking several rounds of showers and storms for Kansas this week, with drizzle developing Monday evening and additional chances arriving Tuesday night and later in the week. Temperatures were expected to climb after a cold start Monday, with heavier rain totals generally favored east of I-135.
What to keep on your radar
- Plan extra time if you commute during Tuesday morning or Wednesday morning, when rain chances may be higher.
- If you are voting Tuesday, consider transit or checking your assigned polling site before you go.
