Wichita council renews Delano common-consumption permit
The Wichita City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, to renew the Delano common-consumption-area permit after a public hearing.
The action preserves a controlled area where qualifying alcoholic beverages purchased from participating businesses may be carried and consumed, subject to the boundaries, hours and restrictions in the city’s authorization.
Where the permit applies
The designated area follows Douglas Avenue from Seneca Street to McLean Boulevard, Sycamore Street from Douglas Avenue south to Maple Street, McLean Boulevard from Douglas Avenue south to Maple Street, and Handley Street from Douglas Avenue 300 feet north.
Visitors should use the city’s boundary signs and participating-business signs rather than assume the permit covers all of Delano. The authorization applies only inside the marked common-consumption area.
Daily hours began earlier in 2026
The August 4 renewal did not establish the current daily schedule. Under the operating framework adopted earlier in 2026, common consumption is authorized daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., beginning February 1, 2026.
The schedule replaced the earlier Friday-and-Saturday arrangement. Tuesday’s vote renewed the permit under the authorized dates, location and times; it should not be read as expanding the boundaries unless the approved resolution expressly provides for an expansion.
Rules for visitors and businesses
Alcohol may be carried and consumed only within the designated boundaries and during authorized hours. Beverages must be purchased from businesses approved to participate in the common-consumption area. The permit does not authorize drinks brought in from outside participating establishments.
Participating businesses must follow the city’s program requirements, including providing approved branded cups and displaying signage identifying their participation status. Not every business in Delano is automatically part of the program.
For visitors, those signs and cups are the practical indicators of where an eligible beverage may be purchased and carried. For nearby businesses, the renewal does not extend the permit to properties that have not received approval to participate.
The Hub remains excluded
Resolution No. 26-043 expressly prohibits alcohol consumption on the property of the Multi-Modal Center, also known as The Hub, at 207 S. Sycamore St.
The restriction matters for people moving between Delano businesses, the transit center and nearby destinations. The common-consumption permit does not authorize drinking everywhere inside the zone or on every property within its boundaries.
What the renewal means locally
For Delano visitors, the council’s action preserves the ability to move between participating businesses with qualifying beverages during the authorized daily schedule. For participating bars and restaurants, it continues the city-approved common-consumption program under its existing geographic and operational limits.
Residents, workers and nearby businesses will still need to account for the same practical limits: the permit applies only at the authorized location, on authorized dates and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Boundary signs, business markings and approved cups remain the clearest guides for where the rules apply.
Wichita’s August 4 renewal keeps the Delano common-consumption area in place, but it does not remove the restrictions that define it.
