Lincoln police say a 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with damage reported at three churches late last month, with incidents clustered near downtown. Investigators said the case began the evening of Feb. 28 with a call about a burglary in progress near 16th and K, followed minutes later by a second report near 13th and F.

Police said the reported damage included smashed stained-glass windows, broken doors and shattered glass, with early estimates ranging from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands. Authorities said the investigation also tied the suspect to a separate report of vandalized stained glass near 13th and H, discovered days later.

2) Streets: nearly $53M in transportation projects

City leaders on Thursday previewed a transportation plan totaling nearly $53 million for the next fiscal year, aimed at safety, smoother travel and long-term upkeep. The package includes street resurfacing and reconstruction, bridge work, sidewalk improvements and traffic-signal upgrades.

Officials said the city expects to start 16 street projects covering about 21 lane miles of arterial streets and roughly 47 lane miles of residential streets, with funding that includes proceeds from the city’s quarter-cent transportation sales tax initiative. Bottom line: expect construction season detours across multiple neighborhoods as work ramps up.

3) Public safety and care: co-responder program hits one year

Lincoln’s co-responder model, which pairs behavioral-health clinicians with police officers on certain calls, marked its first anniversary this week. Officials said the unit responded to 366 calls in its first year, and that 248 people received help that avoided the need for additional emergency intervention.

The program is supported by federal grants and city matching funds through Sept. 30, 2026, with most dollars covering clinician staffing. The goal, city leaders say, is calmer scenes, faster connections to services, and more time for officers to return to other calls.
