Lincoln residents get an early look at planned 70th Street improvements

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities will hold a public open house Thursday, August 6, on planned improvements to approximately one mile of 70th Street between Pioneers Boulevard and Van Dorn Street.

The meeting will give nearby residents, property owners, commuters and transit users an opportunity to review the plans and provide input before construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.

Open house details

The open house is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Holmes Lake Golf Course, 3701 South 70th Street. It is an informational public meeting, not a formal approval vote. Public comments may inform the planning process, but attending the meeting does not guarantee design changes.

What the project would include

The planned work covers several parts of the corridor, including:

• Replacing concrete pavement panels
• Repairing curb and gutter sections
• Replacing inlet tops
• Rebuilding the traffic signal at 70th Street and Van Dorn Street
• Improving bus-stop pads
• Installing ADA-compliant curb ramps

The project would combine pavement, drainage, traffic-signal, transit and accessibility work. The open house is intended to show how the planned improvements fit together along the corridor.

Construction timing and traffic plan

Construction is anticipated in 2027, although the schedule remains subject to the city’s project planning and construction process.

Lincoln’s current plan calls for 70th Street to remain open with one lane in each direction during construction. That is a planned traffic arrangement, not a guarantee that access conditions will be identical throughout every stage of the work.

Transit users may see improved bus-stop pads, while pedestrians and people with disabilities may benefit from the planned curb-ramp work. Residents and property owners along the corridor can use the open house to review the proposal and submit comments before construction planning advances.

How the work would be funded

The city identifies Highway Allocation Funds, commonly known as gas-tax funds, and Lincoln’s quarter-cent sales tax for streets as the project’s funding sources. The project record does not characterize those sources as a new tax or a new appropriation.
