1) Conference USA events stay in Huntsville through 2029

Huntsville has secured the next three years of Conference USA championships across multiple sports, keeping a growing stream of tournament visitors coming downtown. Organizers say next week’s basketball championship at Propst Arena (March 10–14) is expected to bring thousands of fans over five days, with men’s and women’s teams competing for league titles and NCAA tournament bids.

City partners are also tying the tournament to workforce exposure, with a student-focused career program scheduled ahead of tipoff that’s designed to connect local talent to employers while the city is on display.

2) A major Holmes Avenue ‘urban park’ corridor moves closer

City leaders approved a contract for engineering design and construction administration on a long-planned, multimodal Holmes Avenue corridor aimed at linking downtown, UAH and Cummings Research Park. The project spans about 3.25 miles and is expected to add safer crossings, continuous sidewalks, bike facilities, lighting and upgraded signals.

Funding includes a $21.6 million federal grant paired with $9 million in local matching funds. Construction is projected to start near the end of 2027, with completion targeted for summer 2030.

3) Schools outline a $600M, 10-year facilities plan

Huntsville City Schools presented details of a $600 million, 10-year capital plan focused on growth, modernization and specialty programming. Updates shared with city officials highlighted recent work already underway, from a new central office and career tech center to athletics and campus upgrades, plus new advanced magnet campuses in development.

Following the presentation, the district received a check for more than $5 million tied to the closeout of three tax increment financing districts, earmarked to support ongoing facility and infrastructure improvements.

4) Space industry momentum: reactivated test infrastructure and more jobs

A new look at the partnership between a major commercial space company and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center spotlights how Huntsville’s legacy facilities are being repurposed for modern propulsion testing. Leaders involved say the revived Test Stand 4670 has supported hundreds of tests since 2023, and the broader local footprint has grown into the thousands of employees.
