Huntsville voters face Aug. 10 registration deadline ahead of municipal election
Huntsville residents who want to vote in the Aug. 25 municipal election have until Monday, Aug. 10, to register, according to the City of Huntsville.
The election includes City Council races in Districts 2, 3 and 4, along with Huntsville City Schools Board of Education races in Districts 2 and 3. The city lists Ryan Renaud as unopposed and declared the winner for the Board of Education District 4 seat. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.
What is on the ballot
The city’s current candidate list includes Thomas Casez and David Little in City Council District 2; Liliana Peinder, Jennie Robinson and John Stuart in District 3; and Nick Frevold, Bill Kling and Will Pylant in District 4.
Board of Education District 2 lists Holly McCarty and Matt Woolsey. District 3 lists Robert “Coach P” Person and Payten Redfearn. Ryan Renaud is listed as unopposed in District 4 and was declared the winner by the City Council at its July 9 regular meeting.
The city says the candidate list remains subject to changes involving qualifications, withdrawals or failure to file a required statement of economic interest.
Register and verify your information
Residents can register through the Alabama Secretary of State’s voter services system. Registration may be completed online, or residents may request a registration form online and return it by mail to the Madison County or Morgan County Board of Registrars, depending on their home address.
Voters who are unsure whether they are registered can verify their status through the state’s voter information system. Residents should also confirm their district and polling place before Election Day because City Council and school board eligibility depends on the voter’s address.
Absentee ballot deadlines
Registered voters who qualify to vote absentee face separate deadlines from the registration cutoff:
- Aug. 18: Last day to mail an application for a regular absentee ballot. The application must be postmarked by this date.
- Aug. 20: Last day to hand-deliver an application for a regular absentee ballot.
- Aug. 24: Last day to apply for an emergency absentee ballot and to hand-deliver a regular absentee ballot by close of business.
- Aug. 25 at noon: Mailed absentee ballots must be received by the election manager to be counted. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 24.
In-person absentee voting is available through the City Clerk’s Office at Huntsville City Hall, 305 Fountain Circle, on the third floor. The office lists hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Absentee applications and ballots should be submitted according to the city’s current instructions.
The city identifies several reasons a voter may qualify for absentee voting, including being away on Election Day, illness or physical disability, certain temporary work or school situations, serving as an election official or poll watcher, or working a required shift of at least 10 hours that overlaps with polling hours.

Election Day access
Huntsville’s municipal election is Tuesday, Aug. 25. Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters should check the city’s official election information before going to the polls to confirm their assigned location and district-specific ballot.
The city’s election calendar lists Sept. 22 as a possible runoff date. A runoff would occur only if the City Council determines that no candidate received a majority and orders one.
Residents who still need to register, verify their voter information or request an absentee ballot should allow time for online processing, mailing and ballot delivery before the applicable deadline.
