Huntsville Advances Tax District Plan Focused on Von Braun Center

Huntsville is advancing a proposed downtown tax-increment-financing district that could support about five major projects, with upgrades to the city-owned Von Braun Center identified as the priority.

Tax Increment Financing District No. 9 would cover nearly 3,700 acres centered on downtown Huntsville. Local discussion of the plan has put the proposed economic-development funding at approximately $220 million.

Von Braun Center is the priority

Shane Davis, the city’s economic and urban development director, said Von Braun Center work was being prioritized within the district plan. The stated rationale is to help Huntsville keep major conferences competitive as other cities invest in upgraded civic centers.

The Von Braun Center hosts the kinds of conventions, entertainment events and public gatherings that connect downtown development to the city’s broader economic strategy. Improvements there could affect Huntsville’s convention capacity and the supporting downtown infrastructure, although the plan does not establish that construction has begun.

Plan is still moving forward

The proposal was discussed during a Huntsville City Council meeting in May 2026. The district is intended to direct future tax growth toward major downtown projects and other investments rather than representing a completed construction program.

As of Aug. 10, 2026, the financing proposal remained an advancing plan. The city had not established a final construction schedule or a complete project-by-project budget in the public discussion described so far. The approximately $220 million figure is proposed economic-development funding; it should not be read as money already raised or spent.

For Huntsville residents, the next important steps are the city’s continued development of the district and further definition of the projects, costs and timing. The plan’s practical impact will depend on which investments ultimately move forward and how future tax growth is allocated across downtown.
