US-72 East construction brings overnight lane closures in Huntsville

Overnight construction is scheduled on a 1.2-mile section of US-72 East in Huntsville’s Chapman Mountain area, where crews are widening paved shoulders and resurfacing the roadway.

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced the project July 17 and scheduled work to begin Sunday, July 19, weather permitting. The work zone runs from the US-72 interchange with I-565 to Moores Mill Road.

When drivers can expect construction

ALDOT has scheduled work from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. Drivers should expect lane closures during those hours, although construction activity may change because of weather and field conditions.

Grooved or milled pavement may be present in the work zone while crews carry out the shoulder improvements. Drivers should slow down, follow signs and lane markings, and use caution around construction equipment and uneven pavement.

Project cost and expected completion

The project is intended to improve safety by expanding the paved shoulders while resurfacing the roadway. ALDOT estimates the project cost at $942,750 and lists Rogers Group as the contractor.

The agency expects the work to be completed in late summer or early fall. That timing is an estimate rather than a guaranteed deadline, and the official notice does not establish the project’s exact daily progress.

US-72 East drivers in Chapman Mountain should plan for possible nighttime lane restrictions between I-565 and Moores Mill Road. Construction activity and traffic conditions may change from night to night.
