Powerful Santa Ana winds swept through Orange County early Saturday, bringing gusts strong enough to trigger advisories across inland areas and the Santa Ana Mountains.

Forecasters say gusts could reach between 55 and 70 mph in wind-prone areas, raising concerns about downed tree limbs, isolated power outages and difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. The combination of dry air and warm temperatures is also increasing fire risk through Sunday.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and use caution on the roads as the wind event continues into the weekend.

SAPD Conducts DUI and License Checkpoint

The Santa Ana Police Department conducted a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint Friday evening at an undisclosed location within the city. The operation began at 6 p.m. and ran until 1 a.m.

Police officials say checkpoints are aimed at deterring impaired driving and improving roadway safety. Funding for the enforcement effort comes through state traffic safety grants. Motorists traveling Friday night likely noticed increased patrol activity in parts of the city.

Heat Builds Alongside Winds

In addition to the gusty conditions, temperatures are climbing well above seasonal averages. Regional forecasts show highs pushing into the 80s and even low 90s in some parts of Southern California this weekend.

The warm-up, paired with dry offshore winds, is creating elevated fire weather concerns. Officials are reminding residents to avoid activities that could spark flames and to stay hydrated during outdoor events.

With windy, warm conditions expected to linger into Sunday, Santa Ana residents should prepare for a blustery and unusually hot early March weekend.
