Honolulu Festival Marks 30 Years in Waikiki

Waikiki was alive with energy over the weekend as the 30th annual Honolulu Festival took place from March 13 to 15. The three-day event brought residents and visitors together for a wide-ranging celebration of culture, art and community.

Activities were held at the Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Center and Waikiki Beach Walk, featuring live performances, art displays and food events that highlighted ties between Hawaii and Pacific Rim communities.

The weekend culminated Sunday with the Grand Parade along Kalakaua Avenue, drawing large crowds to the heart of Waikiki. The evening concluded with the Nagaoka Fireworks show over Waikiki Beach, a signature moment that capped off the festival’s milestone year.

Organizers emphasized this year’s theme of “Aloha and Mahalo,” honoring three decades of cultural exchange and shared traditions.

Emergency Proclamation Covered Kona Low Impacts

While festival events unfolded, the state continued addressing impacts from a recent Kona Low weather system that affected parts of Oahu and neighboring islands.

A gubernatorial emergency proclamation was in effect from March 10 through March 15, allowing state resources to be deployed to support response and recovery efforts tied to the storm.

The Kona Low brought periods of heavy rain and strong winds, contributing to saturated ground conditions and scattered debris. Officials advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas still dealing with lingering impacts.

Improved Conditions on Monday

By Monday, March 16, conditions in Honolulu had noticeably improved. Skies were partly cloudy with lighter winds compared to the weekend system.

Forecasts indicate daytime highs in the low 80s and lower chances of rain as the immediate impacts of the Kona Low subside.

City officials are reminding residents to stay weather aware as the spring transition continues, especially with changing ocean and wind conditions that can shift quickly this time of year.

After a weekend that blended celebration with caution, Honolulu moves into the new week with calmer skies and a successful 30th Honolulu Festival in the books.
