Louisville I-65 closure update: on track to reopen Aug. 1, detours still active

Louisville’s five-mile I-65 Central Corridor closure remains on track to end soon, project leaders say: the interstate is expected to reopen Saturday, Aug. 1 to two lanes in each direction. Detours are still in effect, and crews expect construction activity to continue along the corridor as the work wraps up.

Where the closure is (and how long it runs)

The closure runs between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street). The project website and TARC describe the shutdown as June 1 through July 31, 2026, with an Aug. 1 reopening expectation.

Latest update: “on track” for Aug. 1

In a July 9 update, Spectrum News 1 reported that I-65 corridor spokesperson Mindy Peterson said crews expect the interstate to reopen in “just over three weeks.” The report also pointed to progress on the bridge work.

According to Spectrum News 1, the corridor project is replacing three bridges. The two bridges still under active work, as described in that update, are a bridge near Kentucky and Brook streets and another bridge over Hill Street.

Even with the Aug. 1 reopening timeline in view, Spectrum News 1 warned drivers should still expect construction along the corridor after the interstate reopens.

What’s already improved for commuters

Officials say earlier phased reopenings have helped traffic, including a previously reopened bridge over Bradley Avenue and the reopening of a two-mile section of southbound I-65. That southbound change also brought back ramps at Crittenden Drive, plus on-ramps from Eastern Parkway and University Boulevard.

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) milestone release says southbound I-65 from University Boulevard to the Watterson Expressway (I-264) was scheduled to reopen to two lanes by 6 a.m. Monday, June 29—ahead of schedule. KYTC also said reopening that segment would reopen four ramps connected to Crittenden Drive, Eastern Parkway, and University Boulevard.

Detours: what drivers should do now

KYTC says through traffic should still use the official signed detour, routing to I-264 west (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) and I-64. The project website also provides “detours at a glance” by direction and destination.

The project site notes KYTC partners with Waze for real-time routing updates.

Transit riders: what TARC says during the project

TARC’s RiderAlert for the June 1–July 31 corridor closure says I-65 is expected to reopen August 1 to two lanes of traffic in each direction. It also warns of restrictions, including local road and ramp closures, through the end of the project.

TARC says that, at this time, there are no scheduled TARC detours or missed stops during the corridor project, but riders should expect possible delays on some routes as traffic flow changes. Riders are told to check back for updates as construction continues.

What to watch between now and Aug. 1

Because Aug. 1 is described as an expected reopening point, not a guarantee, commuters should keep checking the I-65 Central Corridor project site and TARC’s RiderAlerts for any changes in lane availability, access, and traffic impacts. And even after Aug. 1, Spectrum News 1 says drivers should still expect construction activity along the corridor.
