McAllen Wins $6 Million Grant for Proposed Industrial Park
McAllen received a $6 million federal grant for infrastructure at a proposed 47-acre industrial park, but construction and tenants are not guaranteed.
McAllen has received a $6 million federal grant to support public infrastructure for a proposed industrial park near two international bridges, officials announced July 21 and 22.
The funding comes from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and is intended to help prepare about 47 acres along Farm-to-Market Road 1016, also known as West Military Highway, near South 10th Street. The proposed site is between the Anzalduas and Pharr international bridges.
Planned improvements include water, wastewater, drainage and roadway work, along with an extension of McAllen water lines more than 2,600 feet to serve the future industrial park, according to the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal.
Infrastructure first, businesses later
The grant is meant to support public improvements that could make the site usable and more attractive for industrial tenants. A bridge-adjacent location could appeal to companies involved in manufacturing, warehousing, logistics or trade-related activity, while also bringing future questions about truck access, utility capacity and roadway design.
The award does not mean the industrial park is complete or operating. It also does not establish that private companies have signed leases, purchased sites or committed to locate there.
KRGV reported that officials estimate the project could eventually support about 500 jobs. That figure is a projection tied to future business activity, not a current employment total or guaranteed result.
Local funding remains an important question
Before the federal award was announced, project reporting described a proposed $7.8 million infrastructure package. The same report said McAllen expected to contribute $1.5 million from city funds while seeking $6.3 million from the EDA.
The approved fiscal year 2025-26 McAllen budget reviewed for this story does not identify a new FY 2025-26 appropriation for the business industrial park line. Instead, it references prior federal and developer-related funding connected to an earlier McAllen industrial park project.
That distinction matters. The $6 million federal award, the previously reported $1.5 million city contribution and the earlier $7.8 million project estimate are separate pieces of the financing history. Future city records will need to show how the new grant is combined with local funds, developer contributions or other project money.
Why the location matters
If construction proceeds and companies eventually move into the site, nearby roads could see more truck traffic and the city would need to support industrial-scale water, sewer and drainage demand.
The proposed location also places the project near major international freight routes. That could influence how McAllen approaches industrial recruitment, utility extensions, roadway improvements and development priorities in the area.
What happens next
The Rio Grande Valley Business Journal reported that construction could begin as early as September 2026 and end by February 2027. That remains a proposed or expected timeline, not confirmation that construction has started or that every required step is complete.
Residents and businesses should watch for city contracting and procurement records, utility and roadway plans, permitting or environmental requirements, and announcements of private tenants.
For now, McAllen has secured federal infrastructure funding for a proposed industrial park. The development itself, the construction schedule and the potential job creation still depend on additional city actions, project work and future businesses locating at the site.
