San Francisco Gas Slips to $5.82 While Diesel Holds Above $7

Regular gasoline in the San Francisco metro eased to $5.819 per gallon on Saturday, Aug. 1, while diesel slipped to $7.042, according to the latest AAA price check. Both averages remain above their levels from one month and one year ago.
These are metro averages, not prices at every San Francisco station. Drivers may see significant differences depending on the neighborhood, brand and time of day.
Regular gas is down for the day but up for the week
AAA listed regular gas at $5.829 on Friday, making Saturday’s average about 1 cent lower. The price is still about 1 cent higher than the $5.809 average recorded a week ago.
The longer comparisons show why the small daily decline may not feel like much relief for many households. Saturday’s average is 22.6 cents above the $5.593 price from a month ago and $1.141 higher than the $4.678 average from a year ago.
Compared with the last AAA check on July 30, when regular gas averaged $5.836, the latest figure is down about 2 cents.
Diesel remains above $7
Diesel also eased in the short term, but it remains above the $7-per-gallon threshold. AAA’s latest San Francisco metro average was $7.042, down less than 1 cent from $7.045 yesterday and about 3 cents below $7.071 a week ago.
Diesel is still 44.6 cents more expensive than it was one month ago, when AAA listed the average at $6.596. Compared with a year ago, the current average is $1.653 higher than the $5.389 figure.
The latest diesel average is about 2 cents below the $7.065 listed in the July 30 check.
What elevated pump prices can mean locally
Changes of a cent or two may be difficult to notice on a single fill-up, but the larger monthly and yearly gaps can add up for people who drive frequently. Commuters, households taking weekend trips and workers traveling between job sites may face higher transportation costs than they did earlier this summer or last year.
Diesel prices can have a broader effect on fuel-intensive operations. Delivery drivers, contractors, landscapers, construction companies and other service businesses may need to account for higher vehicle costs when planning routes and expenses. Restaurants and businesses that rely on deliveries or regular commercial transportation may also watch fuel prices as part of their operating budgets.
Those are practical implications of the current price levels, not documented changes in local business behavior. The metro averages also do not show what any particular station is charging, so comparing nearby pumps remains important.
National data offers broader context
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest gasoline and diesel update was released July 28, with the next update scheduled for Aug. 4. Its July 27 data placed the national regular-gas average at $4.096 per gallon and the California average at $5.489.
The EIA figures provide broader context, but the AAA San Francisco metro figures are the local evidence for drivers in and around the city.
