San Francisco Regular Gas Near $5.83; Diesel Tops $7.09

San Francisco metro regular gasoline remained near $5.83 per gallon on July 28, while diesel stayed above $7, according to AAA’s latest price snapshot. Both fuels were nearly unchanged from the previous day, but diesel had risen more sharply over the past week, month and year.

AAA listed the San Francisco metro average at $5.829 per gallon for regular gasoline and $7.093 for diesel. These are metro averages, not prices at every station in San Francisco. Actual pump prices can vary by neighborhood, brand, payment method, fuel grade and station-level competition.

Regular gas remains almost flat day to day

Regular gasoline was up 0.6 cents from the previous day’s $5.823 average. The increase was larger over longer comparison periods: 11.2 cents from a week earlier, 19.6 cents from a month earlier and $1.195 from a year earlier.

For commuters and households, the daily change may be difficult to notice at the pump, but the year-over-year difference is more significant. A driver filling a 15-gallon tank would pay roughly $17.93 more at the current average than at the comparable price a year ago, before accounting for station-to-station differences or changes in driving habits.

Diesel remains the bigger recent mover

Diesel averaged $7.093 per gallon, up just 0.1 cents from the previous day. Compared with the prior benchmarks listed by AAA, diesel was 20.1 cents higher than a week earlier, 41.7 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.740 higher than a year earlier.

That difference matters beyond individual drivers. Diesel is commonly used by delivery fleets, commercial vehicles, contractors, construction operators and some service businesses. Higher fuel costs can add pressure to operating budgets, mileage-based work and delivery expenses, although the available price data does not document how any specific San Francisco business is responding.

California and national context

AAA’s California average on July 28 was $5.647 for regular gasoline and $6.889 for diesel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 27 weekly figures placed California regular gasoline at $5.489 and on-highway diesel at $6.670. The EIA‘s national averages were lower, at $4.096 for regular gasoline and $5.313 for diesel.

The different figures reflect different measurement dates, methods and geographic scopes. San Francisco’s metro averages should not be read as a price guarantee for every local pump, and California or national figures should not be substituted for the local estimate.

For residents planning weekend travel, comparing stations before filling up may help. Delivery drivers, contractors, restaurants and other fuel-dependent businesses may also want to watch diesel separately from regular gasoline because the two fuels have been moving at different rates.
