Portsmouth Square Work Brings Kearny Street Changes Through Aug. 15

Construction at San Francisco’s Portsmouth Square will bring a temporary sequence of Kearny Street traffic, sidewalk and Muni changes from July 30 through Aug. 15, city officials said.

San Francisco Recreation and Parks issued a July 29 reminder about the disruption window as crews carry out work connected to the removal of the pedestrian bridge over Kearny Street. The changes will affect drivers, pedestrians and transit riders moving through Chinatown.

People traveling near Portsmouth Square should expect access conditions to change as construction proceeds. The city’s notice says traffic and transit reroutes may be revised during the work period, so the route in place at one point may not remain the same throughout the two-week window.

What is changing on Kearny Street

The work includes removing a 240-foot pedestrian bridge that crosses Kearny Street. The bridge is part of the existing Portsmouth Square infrastructure and its demolition is a major construction step within the broader park improvement project.

The Recreation and Parks notice says two west-side lanes and the park-side sidewalk could be closed if additional time is needed for bridge-removal work. The notice does not say that all of those lanes or the sidewalk will be closed for the entire July 30-Aug. 15 period. Instead, the possible closures are tied to the amount of time required to complete the work.

That means the practical effect for people using the corridor may vary from day to day. Drivers may encounter changing lane configurations, pedestrians may need to use alternate access around the park, and Muni riders may see temporary routing changes as crews work around Kearny Street.

A 1.3-acre Chinatown renovation

Portsmouth Square is a 1.3-acre site in Chinatown. The renovation is intended to change the park while construction activity temporarily affects one of the neighborhood’s key connections.

The bridge-removal work should not be confused with completion of the full renovation. It is one phase of the larger Portsmouth Square improvement project, which includes work on the city-owned site and requires construction access around Kearny Street.

San Francisco Public Works says the project is funded primarily through the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond, Transit Center Impact fees, the Downtown Park Fund, grants and a $6 million state allocation. Those funding sources support the broader public project, while the current notice focuses on the near-term traffic and transit effects of bridge removal.
