Iowa City Gas Prices Dip as Diesel Holds Above $5
AAA’s Aug. 1 Iowa City metro averages show regular gas at $3.841 and diesel at $5.053, with both fuels sharply higher than a month and year ago.
Iowa City’s average regular-gas price dipped slightly from July 31, while diesel also eased but remained above $5 per gallon on Aug. 1. AAA listed regular gasoline at $3.841 per gallon and diesel at $5.053.
Regular gas is slightly higher than last week
AAA’s Iowa City metro average for regular gasoline was down 0.8 cents from July 31, when it was $3.849. The average was still 0.5 cents higher than a week earlier, when it was $3.836.
The longer comparisons show a larger increase. Regular gas was 27.0 cents higher than a month ago and 77.3 cents higher than the same point last year. Iowa City’s average was about 26 cents below AAA’s national average of $4.101 on Aug. 1.
Diesel remains above $5
Diesel averaged $5.053 per gallon in Iowa City, down 0.8 cents from July 31, when it was $5.061. Unlike regular gasoline, diesel was unchanged from a week ago.
The diesel average was 68.8 cents higher than a month ago and $1.478 higher than a year ago. A price above $5 per gallon is especially relevant for commercial drivers, contractors, delivery operators, farmers and service businesses that use diesel-powered vehicles or equipment.
What higher pump prices can mean locally
Fuel costs can affect more than the price of filling a personal vehicle.
