Billings Diesel Tops $5 as Gas Holds Near $4.27
Regular gasoline and diesel are moving in different directions in the Billings metro. AAA’s August 2, 2026, price check put regular gas at $4.274 per gallon, while diesel reached $5.013 per gallon.
Regular gasoline was down 1.7 cents from the previous day and unchanged from the week-ago average. That short-term stability does not mean prices have returned to recent levels: the Billings metro regular-gas average was 38.3 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.106 higher than a year earlier.
Diesel moved higher
Diesel showed more immediate upward pressure. The AAA average rose 2.2 cents from the previous day and increased 4.2 cents from the week-ago average of $4.971. Compared with a month earlier, diesel was up 65.7 cents. It was $1.384 higher than the year-ago average.
For most household drivers, the gasoline figure is the more direct measure of daily commuting and errands. A driver covering long distances for work, school or family responsibilities may notice the cumulative effect even when the weekly average is flat. Station prices can also vary substantially, so the metro average is not the amount every Billings driver will see at the pump.
The diesel increase has a different reach. Contractors, delivery operators, farmers, freight carriers and other businesses that rely on diesel may face higher operating costs even while regular gasoline is temporarily steady. Those costs can affect route decisions, equipment use and pricing for services or deliveries. Restaurants and other businesses that depend on commercial deliveries may also be exposed indirectly.
Local prices can differ by station
Earlier reporting by KTVQ documented meaningful price differences between Billings-area stations. That report does not establish current August 2 prices, but it remains useful context for drivers deciding whether checking several locations is worthwhile. The savings from driving farther depend on the price gap, the vehicle’s fuel economy and the amount of fuel being purchased.
The latest available U.S. Energy Information Administration data also show elevated gasoline and diesel prices nationally and across the Rocky Mountain region, although those weekly figures may lag AAA’s daily Billings snapshot. For the local comparison, the AAA metro row is the more current measure.
