Houghton Lake Flats South Unit project closes Prudenville-area fishing access

Visitors from Prudenville and the surrounding Houghton Lake area will lose access to the Houghton Lake Flats South Unit gazebo and fishing platform while the Michigan Department of Natural Resources replaces aging water-control infrastructure. The DNR announced the rehabilitation project June 30, 2026, with construction expected to run from summer into fall.

The South Unit is a 350-acre wetland in Roscommon County. Its dike system controls water levels, and the project is intended to restore that control and improve wetland habitat. The work will replace the unit’s concrete dam, pumphouse, underground pipes and related structures.

Why the work is happening
