San Luis Obispo candidate filing closes Aug. 7 for city election
San Luis Obispo’s regular filing period for city offices closes Friday, Aug. 7, setting the first major deadline for the city’s Nov. 3, 2026, municipal election.
The filing period for nomination papers and candidate statements began July 13 and runs through Aug. 7. The deadline determines which candidates can move forward in the city election process and helps establish who may appear on the November ballot.
The City of San Luis Obispo’s candidate handbook does not identify the people who had filed by the Aug. 7 deadline. It also does not fully expose the exact offices and number of seats that will be on the 2026 ballot, so the final candidate field and complete ballot lineup should not be inferred from the filing calendar alone.
Possible extension runs Aug. 8-12
The city has scheduled an extended filing period for Aug. 8 through Aug. 12 if an eligible incumbent does not file during the regular period. That extension is conditional; it is not an automatic continuation of the regular deadline.
The additional days could affect the field of candidates for any office where the eligibility condition applies. The city clerk’s later notice of nominees will be the key official step for confirming who qualified to appear on the ballot.
Election-calendar dates to watch
The Secretary of State is scheduled to conduct the randomized alphabet drawing on Aug. 13. That drawing determines the order in which candidate names are placed on the ballot.
The city clerk is scheduled to publish the notice of nominees on Aug. 20. That notice will provide the next formal confirmation of the candidates who advanced through the filing process.
Candidate orientation is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. The event is part of the city’s municipal election calendar and follows the filing, ballot-order and nominee-notice steps.
The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. Polls are scheduled to be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Why the filing deadline matters locally
The election will take place as the city works through its next policy cycle. On June 8, the City Council unanimously approved a nearly $225 million 2026-27 city budget, according to KCBX. That budget decision provides recent local-government context for the election, although the filing materials do not predict which budget or policy issues candidates will emphasize.
The city has also shifted to a citywide single-vote election system, according to city calendar and meeting materials. The available materials do not describe that system as ranked-choice voting.
For residents, the immediate consequence is a sequence of firm dates rather than a final list of contenders: regular filing ends Aug. 7, a possible extension follows Aug. 8-12, and the city clerk’s nominee notice is scheduled for Aug. 20. The Nov. 3 election will then determine the city’s municipal choices, with voting hours set for 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
