Albuquerque firm selected to plan State Fairgrounds Phase 1
New Mexico’s General Services Department selected Albuquerque-based Hartman + Majewski Design Group on Oct. 9, 2026, to prepare detailed Phase 1 plans for redevelopment of the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque.
The State Fairgrounds District Board approved a conceptual Phase 1 plan on March 23, 2026, by a 6-1 vote. The May procurement solicitation describes planning for land preparation, pedestrian improvements near Central and San Pedro avenues, internal roads and utilities, a public park and State Fair infrastructure. It also includes planning for potential housing, retail or mixed-use development and a possible hotel. These are not final designs or confirmed contract obligations.
The governor’s office identified $92 million in bonding capacity and $114 million in state general-fund support as financing sources for Phase 1. Those figures are not the planning contract price or a verified total redevelopment cost. A Sept. 30 district update reported that nearly 2,000 people and families shared park input at a State Fair table and that the district launched a park survey. The district’s Sept. 12 update described traffic and parking studies taking place during the Fair.
The selection advances planning, not construction approval. The state expects to select an anchor developer in December 2026.
