Nebraska orders statewide review of emergency radio systems
Gov. Jim Pillen signed Executive Order 26-24 at North Platte Fire Station 3 on Oct. 15, creating a task force to review Nebraskaโs public-safety communications. The order took effect immediately.
Led by the Nebraska Military Department, the task force will assess radio infrastructure and coverage, equipment distribution and interoperability, responder training and operational readiness. Its fact-finding study concerns the statewide communications system used for disaster response. Participants include state emergency management, State Patrol, transportation, information technology and fire-safety agencies, Game and Parks, Nebraska Public Power District, municipal and county organizations, and rural volunteer-fire leadership.
The review will also examine possible state, federal and local funding streams and ongoing support models. The governorโs office cited recent severe weather and wildfires as context for the review.
A final report with fact-finding, baseline gaps and actionable recommendations is due within 60 days of signing, or Dec. 14. The order does not fund upgrades or authorize equipment purchases.
